Jill Barklem was drawn to the natural world ever since childhood. While training as an illustrator at St Martin’s School of Art, her long journeys to college on the London Underground gave her time to escape into the imaginary world of a colony of mice, which she later developed into the delightful escapades of Wilfred Toadflax, Primrose Woodmouse and all the beloved animals of Brambly Hedge. On publication, her intensive research and astonishing attention to detail did not go unnoticed with The Sunday Times Magazine describing her books as “the most research-crammed fantasy ever set before small children”. Jill passed away in 2017, but her legacy lives on in these enchanting tales.

Jill Barklem’s glorious illustrations now appear on a growing range of merchandise and in February 2020, Lupus Films, the animation studio behind The Tiger Who Came to Tea, We’re Going on a Bear Hunt and The Snowman & The Snow Dog, announced it will adapt the Brambly Hedge stories for the screen.
