The Characters of Brambly Hedge

The Toadflaxes Mr and Mrs Toadflax and their family all live together in the Hornbeam tree at the end of the hedge. Mr Toadflax is easy going and loves to watch the world go by. Mrs Toadflax raises her four lively children with loving care. They are the parents of Wilfred, Teasel, Catkin and Clover.

Wilfred Toadflax is not only mischievous, he is also the most energetic of all the Toadflax children. He often gets in to trouble by playing his whistle, banging on drums and firing acorns with his slingshot. He loves to explore new places and to go on expeditions.

Lord and Lady Woodmouse Lord Woodmouse & Lady Daisy Woodmouse live in Old Oak Palace. Lord Woodmouse is a kind and knowledgeable mouse. He is the central figure of the community and oversees the preparation of all celebrations. He has great respect for the time-honoured traditions of Brambly Hedge, and is currently writing a history of Brambly Hedge. Lady Daisy is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Apple. Their daughter is Primrose.

Primrose Woodmouse Primrose Woodmouse is the only child of Lord Woodmouse & Lady Daisy Woodmouse and is the granddaughter of Mr &Mrs Apple. She is a cute and curious mouse who rises early each day to play with her good friend, Wilfred Toadflax. She and Wilfred love exploring Old Oak Palace, for it has all sorts of unexpected little rooms and secret passageways.

Mrs Crustybread Mrs Crustybread is the Cook at Old Oak Palace. Mrs Crustybread prepares beautiful cakes for all the celebrations of Brambly Hedge.

Dusty Dogwood Dusty Dogwood works at the Flour Mill making all the flour for Brambly Hedge. He is always covered from head to tail with evidence of his work. He is a cheerful and good-natured mouse who marries Poppy Eyebright in the charming Summer Story.

Poppy Eyebright is in charge of the Dairy Stump. A hard worker, she keeps the Dairy Stump running in perfect order. In Summer Story, she's a beautiful summer bride who marries Dusty Dogwood. Soon after having her three little mice (Rose, Pipkin and Buttercup), she and her family move into Mayblossom cottage.

Mrs Eyebright is Poppy's grandmother. She has a remarkable memory and loves to tell stories of her youth.

Mrs Apple Mr and Mrs Apple live at Crabtree cottage. Mr Apple is the keeper of the Store Stump and a valued member of the community. He takes great pride in his work and is a very friendly mouse. Mrs Apple is a kind and good mouse. An excellent cook, her primrose puddings are always in demand. Mrs Apple is currently collecting her recipes together in a Cookery Book. Their daughter Daisy is married to Lord Woodmouse. They are Primrose's loving grandparents.

Basil Basil is in charge of all the home-made wines and cordials that are kept in the Store Stump cellars. He lives in the Elderberry Lodge in a splendid elderberry bush. He is a good-natured mouse and can tell interesting stories for hours on end.

The Weavers Flax and Lily live at the end of the hedge in the tangly hawthorn trees, by the stream.
