The Story of Brambly Hedge

The High Hills
The next book, THE HIGH HILLS, again featured Wilfred, that intrepid explorer, and drew upon the Lake District for its background. Jill did much of her natural history research in the area and family holidays were combined with finding suitable streams, waterfalls and flora.

The BarklemsAnother baby was on the way too. As Jill painted Wilfred and Mr Apple clinging to the ledge, it was hard to reach over to the drawing board. Again it was a race against time. Would she be able to complete the book before the new baby's arrival? She handed the artwork into Collins by the agreed date and in July 1984 Peter was born.

Before long the family outgrew the new house. It was time for another move. Jill needed a proper room of her own where she could be both part of the family and yet shielded from much of its day to day bustle. It was slightly easier the second time round to combine her family role with the requirements of her publisher and public, and she was helped by the arrival of a series of excellent nanny housekeepers, who would free her from many of the household chores. However, in spite of planning and help, there were still some dark days when she agonized over whether she could really manage both.
